IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL SOMEBODY CONJURES SATAN

My lungs burned and my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest as I sprinted down the stairs. “Okay,” I puffed. “I’m starting an exercise regimen as soon as the holidays are over.”

I burst into my Yaya’s old room and ran to the bed. Wallie and Michelle lay on top of the blankets, serenely asleep. They were cuddled into each other, looking cute as ever. But I needed them awake. I shook Wallie. “Wal, wake up.” Nothing. Panic filled me, and I shook him harder. “Wake up, Wallace Harper, you wake up right this instant!” I yelled as I shook his shoulders.

He moaned and blinked several times. “What? Who…when, what happened?”

I smirked. He was worse than me when someone woke him. It always took me a little bit to realize where I was. As he oriented himself, I rushed around to the other side of the bed and grabbed Michelle’s shoulders. “We conjured Satan, wake up!”

The moment her eyelids fluttered open; I ran for the door. “Owen!” I screamed. “Olivia!”

I didn’t know what bedroom Olivia was in since she didn’t live here, but Owen had taken to using the one that had been my mother’s. After we remodeled it, and I had cleaned out all the personal things, preserving some of the items for Wallie and distributing others around the house, it hadn’t bothered me to let him use it as his own. Alfie had taken the only remaining guest room, so I had to let Owen have Winnie’s or Mom’s.

Winnie’s was still too fresh. Too painful. That’s why it went to Wallie.

Owen had decorated it with a lot of black. I burst into his room to find him lying the same way, serene, on his back. Since he was in bed alone, he was in the center and looked calmer and more peaceful than I’d ever seen him.

“Wake up!” I screeched. So much for serenity.

Owen sat bolt upright. “What?” His black hair was plastered to the back of his head like he’d been asleep for hours instead of minutes.

“Santa is Satan!” I screamed. “Santa is Satan! Gotta find Olivia, come on!” I scurried out of the room and as Michelle and Wallie watched on from the far side of the hall with shocked expressions on their faces, I slammed into the door to my bedroom, across the hall from Owen’s. The door hit the wall and I sagged in relief. Thankfully, Olivia was asleep on my bed.

“Wake up!” I jumped onto the bed and shook my friend. “Up, up, up!”

She screamed in my face as I screamed in her face, which startled me, so I screamed more, making her scream louder and start to fight me.

“Stop screaming!” Owen screamed.

“Why is everyone screaming?” Michelle asked.

“Santa was Satan!” I fell back to rest on my haunches in the middle of the bed and clenched my fists. “We have to find Santaaaaaa!” I sucked in a deep breath. “I mean Satan.
